The Imperial Cities of the Persian Gulf
Arabs had been building imperial cities along the Persian Gulf coast for centuries. The Bani Khalid ruled over Muharram b. Al-Qudama at Jeddah in the 10th century. The Abbasids followed this tradition in the 10th century, and Ibn Al-Faris and Ibn Al-Nafis became the founders of a new capital near Jeddah. In the 15th century, the Safavids followed the tradition of the Abbasids and built at the Bahri (the modern name is Jeddah) a capital called Bani Hashim which they ruled from for a century and a half.
By the time of the Ottoman Empire the Bani Hashim were always aligned with the Ottoman Sultan. They were loyal allies and many Safavid princes married into the hakim (landlord or governor) families. Thus the Safavids continued the tradition of the Abbasid and the Ottoman.
In 1815, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the Bani Hashim dynasty was abolished. Then the son of the Emir of Bahri, Al-Saud, moved to Jeddah, inherited the Bahri and founded a new dynasty called Al-Saud. This dynasty remains the ruling dynasty of Saudi Arabia. The new dynasty built houses for the Bedouin and new schools for the sons of the Bani Hashim. The new Al-Saud dynasty built a new city, Jeddah, near the old Bahri. This new city was called Jeddah after the dynasty. Since then, all rulers of Saudi Arabia have been from the Al-Saud dynasty.
